Tropical cyclones in general are very efficient rain producers, because they draw large quantities of water vapor into the atmosphere from a warm ocean. In other words, the most rain falls where it rains the hardest for the longest. ![]() The amount of rain that falls at a given location can be boiled down to a surprisingly simple equation: The total precipitation equals the average rainfall rate, multiplied by the rainfall duration. The Saint Cloud Airport rainfall totals did not rank in the 10 heaviest rainfalls on record. Note that the daily record for yesterday is nearly three and a half inches. So, the SCSU total would have beaten this record, but the Airport did not get as much, keeping the record intact. ![]() The August 26 record rainfall is 2.70 inches, set in 1995. However, this rainfall won't set any records in Saint Cloud. That rainfall rate is what made a lot of the rain go into flooding rather than soak into the soil. More incredibly, the Saint Cloud Airport recorded 1.57 inches of rain between 2 and 3 AM with 1.09 inch in 23 minutes.
